Who has the right to claim the title of a cyclist, one might ask?

Cycling community's inclusivity isn't complete without representing the diversity of all women, including those of larger builds and African-American descent.

A cycling group lacks authenticity without the inclusion of plus-sized African-American females.

In the world of cycling, a diverse group of riders—including fat Black women, disabled cyclists, trans and queer riders, elders, and those who ride for joy—are challenging the status quo. These individuals, often marginalized by unspoken hierarchies, elitism, and gatekeeping, are striving to fully participate in clubs and group rides.

One such cyclist, who identifies as a fat Black woman, is making waves in the cycling community. This newcomer, who recently completed a century ride, has faced significant exclusion and barriers but refuses to let them deter her.

Cycling club exclusivity, with its covert hierarchies based on bike type, riding speed, and cycling experience, can be a major obstacle for marginalized riders who may not have access to expensive or specialized equipment or fit traditional performance stereotypes. This cyclist, however, believes that anyone who rides a bike can call themselves a cyclist, regardless of their size, speed, or the cost of their bike.

Fashion and appearance gatekeeping, with strict, often implicit, expectations around cycling apparel and brand affiliation, also create artificial barriers that discourage participation. This cyclist, who started riding a city bike during the pandemic and didn't own a bike at first, using bike share bikes, is a testament to the joy that can be found in cycling, regardless of one's attire or gear.

Infrastructure and representation are other significant challenges. Marginalized cyclists, such as disabled riders and elders, often face infrastructural challenges like insufficient accessible bike lanes or adaptive bikes, and lack visibility or representation in mainstream cycling culture. This cyclist advocates for telling more complete stories in cycling that reflect the experiences of those who have been pushed to the margins.

The cyclist's journey is not without its setbacks. In 2023, they launched Black Girl Joy Bike Ride, a cycling group for Black women. Despite the Mid South gravel race being canceled, the cyclist still rode their 100 miles. However, on another ride, they were pulled off the route for safety after riding nearly 80 miles.

Despite these challenges, the cyclist continues to fight for access, equity, and inclusion in cycling. They believe that a true community in cycling involves more than just those who show up, but also those who feel welcome, who are invited, and who are made visible. This year, they were accepted into the All Bodies on Bikes cohort to ride in the Mid South gravel race.

The cyclist's dream without limits and finds joy in every mile of cycling, bringing Black women with them. They believe that confidence is a form of resistance and have built their life around helping others live joyful, beautiful lives. This summer, they rode with Keshia Roberson, a fellow Philly native and founder of the 1928 Legacy Tour, in a century ride from Philadelphia to Baltimore. Later that night, they, along with Keshia and their mechanic Em, rode the final miles around Lake Montebello in Baltimore, completing a total of 101 miles.

Addressing the social exclusion, economic barriers, cultural gatekeeping, and infrastructural limitations faced by marginalized cyclists requires dismantling elitist norms in clubs, making gear and insurance more accessible, designing inclusive infrastructure, and promoting diverse representations that validate joy and varied cycling experiences outside stereotypical performance-focused frames. The cyclist's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and the transformative power of cycling.
