A feline fatality unfolds in the narrative titled 'Caught Stealing', signifying a tragic outcome from simply cat-sitting a neighbor's pet.
In the heart of New York City in 1998, the movie "Caught Stealing" unfolds, a gripping crime thriller that has left audiences on the edge of their seats. Produced by Sony Pictures, the film is an adaptation of Charlie Huston's 2014 novel of the same name.
At the centre of the story is Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler, a hard-drinking screw-up with an air of sweetness and innocence. Hank's life takes a dramatic turn when he finds himself in the midst of a high-stakes heist, involving a missing key, a lot of guns, and a few million dollars in cash.
The movie features a sky-high body count and a scene where the protagonist loses a kidney. Aronofsky, the director, often flashes back to that tragedy to underscore how little control Hank has had over his destiny, and also to set him up for a thrilling comeback.
The film is set against the backdrop of grungy late-'90s New York, a city Aronofsky, who was raised in Brooklyn and later lived in the East Village, clearly has a deep affection for. Many desperate chases take place in the movie, including one through a crowded fish market and around the scenic Flushing Meadows in Queens, with a detour through Shea Stadium.
Regina King plays the detective named Elise Roman in the movie, a role that is voiced by Claudia Urbschat-Mingues in the German dub. Two Russian-speaking mobsters also make an appearance in the film.
Matthew Libatique, Aronofsky's longtime cinematographer, filmed "Caught Stealing" and also filmed the summer's other sweatily atmospheric New York crime thriller, 'Highest 2 Lowest'.
The movie also stars Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onofrio as Ultra-Orthodox Jewish actors, and Matt Smith as Hank's next-door neighbour, Russ, who sports a fiery orange Mohawk. Zoë Kravitz plays Yvonne, Hank's girlfriend and a paramedic.
"Caught Stealing" is a must-watch for fans of gritty crime dramas, offering a unique blend of action, drama, and a touch of nostalgia for the late '90s New York City.
