"A Joyful Individuals Suffers Injury Due to Supermarket's Roof Cave-in"
A portion of the roof at a Rewe Supermarket in Lauchringen, southern Baden-Württemberg, has collapsed, causing injuries and substantial damage estimated in the millions.
The incident occurred on a recent day, with 26 people in the store at the time. The collapse occurred over the cash registers where customers had recently paid for their purchases.
Four people have been injured as a result of the roof collapse, with two suffering severe injuries. The identities of the victims have not been confirmed as of late evening. A rescue helicopter was called to the scene, but it was not needed to transport any of the severely injured to a clinic.
Rescue teams are using thermal imaging cameras to search for casualties. The fire department had previously turned off the electricity, water, and gas in the supermarket. The police have secured the building and cordoned it off.
The Rewe supermarket, where the roof collapsed, was recently renovated and reopened in mid-August. It is unclear if the renovation included work on the roof. The specific construction works carried out remain unclear.
Investigators are expected to deploy an expert to determine the cause of the roof collapse. No statement regarding the renovation has been made by the trading company Rewe.
Among the fallen debris, inflated balloons and a mirror dangle from a chain. The goods, especially the refrigerated and frozen ones, are likely to spoil.
Mike König, deputy commander of the Lauchringen fire department, states that the roof collapsed in just three seconds. He also notes that the incident could have been much worse, as there were relatively few people in the store and few customers waiting in line at the cash registers.
The solar panel system on the roof was also shut down to ensure it posed no further danger. As investigations continue, it is hoped that the cause of the roof collapse will be determined, and the necessary steps can be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
