A Look Back at the 2009 VMAs: The Chaotic and Scandalous Event of Award Shows

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) will forever be remembered as one of the most memorable, messy, and chaotic awards shows in history. Hosted by Russell Brand, the event took place on September 13, 2009, and served as a tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

The night began with a string of impressive performances. Beyoncé took the stage to perform her hit single "Single Ladies," which earned her the Video of the Year award. Muse made their American television debut, and Pink performed an aerial dance routine to "Sober." Lady Gaga gave a memorable performance of "Paparazzi," which is now considered one of the greatest VMAs performances of all time.

However, the night took an unexpected turn when Taylor Swift took the stage to accept her award for Best Female Music Video. Just fifteen minutes after Kanye West infamously interrupted her speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs, Swift was once again in the spotlight. As she began her speech, West stormed the stage, grabbing the microphone and claiming that Beyoncé should have won. Swift was visibly shocked, and the audience booed West whenever he was mentioned for the rest of the ceremony.

Despite the interruption, the show went on. Jay-Z, Eminem, and Beyoncé also performed, with Jay-Z and Eminem winning Best Hip Hop Video and Best Video of the Year, respectively. The night ended on a high note when Beyoncé invited Taylor Swift onstage to "have her moment."

The 2009 MTV VMAs was also marked by a Best New Artist segment that featured a call to action to join the US Army. However, the event was overshadowed by Russell Brand's inappropriate jokes about wanting to sleep with or assault female attendees during the show.

Looking back, the 2009 MTV VMAs is a perfect time capsule of the year. It was super fun if you ignore all the sexism, as some have said. Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift were in a relationship at the time, and Swift's performance began in a subway and ended on a yellow cab. The event is remembered as a chaotic and iconic moment in music history, and will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable awards shows of all time.
