A newborn baby girl was delivered at the Burning Man festival to a mother who had not realized she was expecting.
In the heart of Black Rock City, Nevada, Maureen O'Reilly, a registered nurse, found herself in an extraordinary situation. On the fourth day of Burning Man, a woman unexpectedly went into labour, and O'Reilly was the first responder in the vicinity.
The woman, a resident of Reno, Nevada, was 35 weeks pregnant but didn't realise it until she went into labour. What she experienced is called a cryptic pregnancy, a rare occurrence where the pregnancy goes unnoticed until delivery, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
O'Reilly, with the help of two other strangers - an emergency nurse and an OBGYN - assisted in the delivery. The little girl, named Aurora, was born weighing 3 pounds and 9.6 ounces and measuring 16.5 inches.
Upon hearing the news, O'Reilly's campmates notified her about the birth, and she immediately rushed to help. Upon arrival, she held the newborn until medics arrived due to concerns about medical supplies in the area. She called for heat and blankets to keep the newborn warm in the rugged environment.
The experience has left a lasting impact on O'Reilly. She considers it the most memorable thing she'll ever experience in her life. O'Reilly felt a closeness to the baby as she was the first person to hold her in her first moments of life. In recognition of her assistance, Aurora's parents have already called Maureen O'Reilly "third grandma."
Aurora was airlifted to a nearby hospital after the medics arrived. Despite the challenging circumstances, everything went smoothly, and both mother and baby are doing well.
