A supposedly large shark is reported to have claimed the life of an individual at a beach in Sydney, marking the first fatal incident since 2022.

A tragic incident occurred today in the waters off northern Sydney, claiming the life of a man who was surfing between Long Reef and Dee Why beaches. The exact identity of the victim has not been released, and no further details about the individual have been made available.

According to reports, the man was pulled out of the morning surf and died at the scene. Emergency services rushed to Long Reef Beach following alerts that the man had suffered critical injuries. New South Wales police confirmed the man's death in a statement.

The incident was reported by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and was said to have been caused by a suspected "large shark" attack. A surfer, who chose to remain anonymous, reported that a significant part of the victim's lower half had been attacked.

Four or five surfers pulled the victim out of the water, according to the surfer's account, which was reported by Sydney's Daily Telegraph. People were ordered out of the water following the attack, and the Pacific Ocean beaches between Manly and Narrabeen were closed "pending further notice."

The search results do not contain information about the identity of the victim of the fatal shark attack off the north coast of Sydney. Two sections of a surfboard were recovered for forensic examination.

This is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 2022, when a 35-year-old British diving instructor named Simon Nellist lost his life in similar circumstances. The previous fatal attack in Sydney was in 1963.

The community is urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines when visiting the beach. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that exist in our natural environment.

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
