Absentee Roster Expands for Luke Donald's European Ryder Cup Squad, Including 8 Notable Golfers
The countdown to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, New York, in September 2025, is on, and several European golfers have been making their mark on the tour in the lead-up to the prestigious event.
Sergio Garcia, a veteran of the game, registered just two top 10s in the 54-man field after his victory in Hong Kong in March, signalling his return to form after a brief hiatus. Garcia, who had an undefeated record with Jon Rahm at the 2021 Ryder Cup, rejoined the DP World Tour at the end of 2024.
Speaking of top performers, Thomas Detry, who came 13th in the European Ryder Cup rankings, added another feather to his cap by winning the WM Phoenix Open. Detry's consistent performances earned him a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup team, automatically qualifying for the event.
Aaron Rai, another rising star, registered a T4 finish at the Mexico Open and a T5 at the Wyndham Championship. Rai's impressive form saw him play the Team Cup in January, where he registered two wins, one loss, and one tie. However, a series of four cuts in the PGA Tour season may have affected his Ryder Cup prospects.
Harry Hall, known for his exceptional putting skills, has not missed a cut since mid-March. Despite a successful season on the PGA Tour, Hall missed out on a spot in the European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup. Similarly, Marco Penge, one of the longest and straightest hitters in the professional game, also missed out despite registering two victories on the DP World Tour.
The European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup will be led by several automatic qualifiers, including Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, and Rasmus Hojgaard, who automatically qualified for the event. Nicolai Hojgaard, the only rookie in Team Europe, will make his Ryder Cup debut in this much-anticipated event.
Luke Donald, who was still the captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup held at Bethpage Black in New York, has announced his six captain's picks for the team. These include Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, and Matt Fitzpatrick. The captain for the European team for the 2025 Ryder Cup has not been named yet.
As the Ryder Cup approaches, several players are making their case for a spot in the team. Alex Noren claimed the win at the British Masters in 2025, while Matt Wallace narrowly missed out on a spot, finishing runner-up at the Omega European Masters. The race for the Ryder Cup is heating up, and only time will tell who will represent Europe in this prestigious event. The Ryder Cup will take place in New York at Bethpage Black from September 26-28th, 2025.
