German Television Award 2025: Otto Waalkes Honoured for Lifetime Achievement

In a grand TV gala held in Cologne, it was announced that comedian Otto Waalkes will be receiving the German Television Award for Lifetime Achievement 2025. The award, a testament to a career spanning over five decades, will be presented by MagentaTV, working in collaboration with ZDF.

Otto Waalkes, a 77-year-old artist from Hamburg, is celebrated as a gifted comedian and one of the most versatile entertainers in German television history. His humor, which has accompanied entire generations, has significantly shaped the understanding of humor in Germany since the 1970s, according to Arnim Butzen, TV chief of Telekom and chairman of the German Television Award 2025.

Butzen, in his statement, expressed admiration for Waalkes, stating that he repeatedly sharpens their view of the absurdities of life and entertains them excellently with his seemingly insatiable joy in elevated nonsense. This year, the German Television Award is supported by ARD, RTL, Sat.1, ZDF, Deutsche Telekom, Disney+, Netflix, and Prime Video, with Apple TV+ joining as a sponsor for the first time.

Waalkes, in his acceptance speech, expressed a positive view of changes in the TV industry over the past few years, citing increased competition from the internet and streaming as a potential benefit. He was almost revered by his younger colleagues in the comedy hit "LOL - Last One Laughing" on Amazon Prime Video in 2024.

In recent years, Waalkes has been active in various productions, including "LOL - Last One Laughing". His first TV show aired in 1973 and became a hit, achieving a viewing quota of 44 percent in the third edition. Waalkes is not only a comedian but also a musician, actor, director, voice actor, and artist.

The grand TV gala where Otto Waalkes will receive the award is scheduled to be broadcast on September 10 by ZDF. The lead for the German Television Award in 2025 is held by MagentaTV, working with ZDF for its implementation. The patrons of the award, including Butzen, announced this a week before the ceremony.

Waalkes finds humor in the fact that his old TV shows are now labeled with warning notices, referencing a debate from 2023. Despite the passage of time, his impact on German television remains undeniable, making him a deserving recipient of the German Television Award for Lifetime Achievement 2025.
