Increased Action Called for in Combating Feminicides - Activists demand increased efforts to combat female homicides

In a significant move, the Left party in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt has put forward a motion, aiming to address the issue of gender-based violence. The motion is not limited to calling for a federal council initiative to introduce a new murder aggravating circumstance, but also seeks to raise public awareness about femicides, warning signs, and support services.

The motion comes in the wake of several shocking cases that have recently occurred in the region. In Genthin, a man was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter, after stabbing his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend to death with six knife wounds in January. A similar tragedy unfolded in Weißenfels, where a 47-year-old woman was allegedly strangled by her partner and later died in the hospital. In Burg, a man is said to have killed his 35-year-old wife during a prison visit in early April. These cases, along with a murder in Burg, have caused outrage and prompted the Left party to take action.

The proposed motion calls for the introduction of a standalone criminal offense of "femicide" in Germany. This new crime would specifically target killings motivated by the victim being female, closing a gap in the current legal system where such crimes are typically classified under the existing offenses of murder or manslaughter. The party's parliamentary group leader, Eva von Angern, stated this in a motion.

The Left party's motion in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt also includes a demand for special training for police officers. This training would aim to equip officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and respond effectively to cases of gender-based violence.

The party's initiative is not unique. Lower Saxony's justice minister, Kathrin Wahlmann, has proposed a similar initiative. The introduction of a specific aggravating circumstance for femicides would ensure that such crimes are always considered with the particular reproachfulness they deserve. The goal is to ensure that femicides are always punished with a life sentence.

As of now, there are no available search results indicating a specific date or location for a discussion in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament about introducing an independent crime of femicide. However, the Left party's motion underscores a growing movement to address gender-based violence and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

In addition to the motion, the Left party is also calling for increased public awareness about femicides, warning signs, and support services. By raising awareness and providing resources, the party hopes to empower individuals and communities to take action against gender-based violence.

This is a critical step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of women in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond. The Left party's motion serves as a call to action for all political parties and communities to work together to end gender-based violence and create a safer, more equitable society for everyone.
