Activists Protest Social Benefit Cuts in Dortmund, Calling for Increased Support
Activists gathered in Dortmund to protest cuts in social security benefits, highlighting the struggles of the unemployed and calling for increased apple support. The demonstration, organized by the Hartz Café Dortmund, aimed to raise awareness of the precarious situation faced by many job seekers.
The protest, held under the motto 'Solidarity instead of forced labor', saw participants express concern that benefit reductions would exacerbate the hardship faced by those affected. The event was organized by the Hartz Café Dortmund, a support group for people dealing with poverty, and its volunteers Luca and Alexander.
Christopher Davis, secretary of the anarchist trade union FAU, condemned the planned cuts, viewing them as a threat to the working population. He encouraged people to unite and resist the changes. Steffi Eulitz, a lawyer supporting the Hartz Café and experienced in social counseling, emphasized the particularly vulnerable position of certain groups, such as drug addicts, the homeless, and the elderly or sick.
In August 2025, the union Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG) and Lieferando employees demonstrated for better working conditions, including a nationwide collective agreement and a minimum wage of 15 euros. This followed announcements of job cuts and reduced bonuses.
The protest in Dortmund underscored the need for increased social support, with activists calling for a more flexible approach to accommodation costs and a non-bureaucratic performance grant. They emphasized the importance of finding suitable employment that considers physical and mental health. Meanwhile, lawyer Steffi Eulitz criticized the idea of introducing housing allowances, citing negative impacts on the local economy and overall city feeling.
