The Roslagsbanan network, connecting the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm with the capital, has seen a significant upgrade with the introduction of Stadler trains since 2023. These trains, operating reliably even under harsh climatic conditions, are set to be joined by ten more electric trains, ordered by Stockholm Transport (SL) on August 13, 2025.

The total value of the initial order, which includes an option for a total of 31 more vehicles, is approximately 100 million euros (94 million Swiss francs). The customised trains will be built in Bussnang, Switzerland, and are designed to be barrier-free, offering ample space for strollers and wheelchairs.

The unique features of the Roslagsbanan railway line, including its narrow-gauge of 891 millimeters, necessitated a special design for the new Stadler trains. These trains, intended to supplement, not replace, the existing fleet, can accommodate approximately 300 passengers, with 150 seats available.

Annika Bergström, Head of Project Development Roslagsbanan, has praised the new Stadler trains, stating that they have proven reliable in daily operation. The new trains will replace over 30-year-old vehicles of another manufacturer.

Delivery of the new trains is planned in stages from 2027, with operations starting in 2028. This expansion is a significant step towards modernising the Roslagsbanan network and improving the commuting experience for its passengers.
