Adidas announces review of partnership with Yeezy brand

In a recent turn of events, Adidas has announced that they are reconsidering their partnership with rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West, also known as Ye. This decision comes amidst a series of controversies surrounding West's public statements and actions.

The Yeezy brand, a collaboration between West and Adidas, has been a significant success for both parties, with iconic products born from the partnership. However, West has lobbed various criticisms at Adidas and its executives in recent weeks, claiming that the brand offered him $1 billion to end their relationship.

West's behaviour, including cozying up to polarizing figures like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, has garnered attention, both positive and negative. One of the most controversial moments was West wearing a "White Lives Matter" T-shirt to his Paris fashion week show, causing widespread outrage.

Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, expressed concern over West's controversial T-shirt, stating that "Black Lives Matter" is a necessary stance due to the grave consequences of inequality in America. Combs, however, also posted a video to his Instagram page expressing his support for West as a free thinker.

Adidas, in an emailed statement, said that successful partnerships are rooted in mutual respect and shared values. They have taken the decision to place the partnership under review, stating that they are proud of their work with West and the products that were born from the collaboration.

During the review period, Adidas plans to continue co-managing the current Yeezy products. Meanwhile, Gap Inc., who also have a Yeezy partnership, did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding their Yeezy Gap merchandise.

The Yeezy Gap deal has broken up, adding to the instability of the Yeezy Adidas union. This development comes nine years after the messy breakup of the Nike Yeezy collaboration, which occurred in 2013. Nike had previously collaborated with West on the Air Yeezy and Air Yeezy II sneakers before he moved to Adidas.

In a since-deleted Instagram post, West declared "I am Adidas" and accused the brand of stealing his designs. This allegation, along with West's controversial statements and actions, has put a strain on the partnership.

Despite the controversies, the draw of the Yeezy brand may be hard to resist. Nike Yeezy shoes now sell for tens of thousands of dollars on sneaker resale sites, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the Yeezy brand.

In his 2016 song "Facts", West accused Nike of treating employees like slaves and claimed that the company couldn't give its merchandise away. This suggests that the Yeezy brand's success may not be solely due to the partnership with Adidas, but also West's ability to create a unique and desirable product.

Embracing "White Lives Matter" crossed a line in many people's eyes, according to various reports. Whether Adidas will decide to end their partnership with West remains to be seen. However, it is clear that the Yeezy brand, and West's partnerships with major fashion brands, have had a significant impact on the fashion industry.
