Aerial blood samples in Dresden: Speedier lab deliveries made possible by unmanned aircrafts
In the heart of Eastern Germany, a groundbreaking innovation is taking flight. A Dresden-based company, German Copters DLS GmbH, is revolutionising the transportation of blood samples in the Ore Mountains region, with plans to expand across the Free State of Saxony.
The drone service, which currently transports approximately 50 blood samples daily from 14 practices in the Dippoldiswalde, Altenberg, and Glashütte areas to Dresden, is designed with one top priority: ensuring that these vital samples arrive safely and quickly.
The 12-minute test route between the Ore Mountains and Dresden has been a resounding success, demonstrating the potential of this service to bypass traffic jams and construction sites, potentially reducing transport times by up to 60%. This project showcases the innovation hub of Dresden.
The drone, 2.40 meters long, has enough battery life for the test route and can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. It is equipped with three SIM cards to ensure constant reception. However, it does not yet fly completely autonomously and requires human intervention if obstacles like cranes appear on its route.
The drone is monitored by experienced pilot Matea Zivkovic, who is located in Croatia. Despite its impressive top speed given its length and battery life, the safety of the cargo is a priority during the drone's flight.
The goal is to evaluate blood samples within a maximum of four hours after they are taken. The vision for the future is the delivery of drones directly to the window of the respective laboratory. During the pandemic, the importance of fast and accurate evaluation of blood samples became evident.
German Copters DLS GmbH aims to fly numerous new individual routes and potentially the entire Free State of Saxony in the future. Obtaining permits is necessary for the drones to move on new routes. In case of no permits, an emergency landing is always required.
This innovative service saves time and personnel in the transportation of blood samples. By using drones, they are able to avoid delays caused by traffic and construction, ensuring that vital samples reach their destination promptly.
The company transporting these blood samples daily by drone from 14 practices in the Ore Mountains region to Dresden is German Copters DLS GmbH, based in Dresden. This project is just one example of the company's commitment to innovation and efficiency in the transportation industry.
