Aerial transport of blood samples in Dresden: expedited journey to the lab through the use of drones
In the heart of Germany, the city of Dresden is making waves with its latest innovation. A drone service, operated by German Copters DLS GmbH, is transforming the way blood samples are transported within the region.
This project, which has become a daily ritual since early May, is another shining example of the innovation hub that is Dresden. The company behind this operation, German Copters DLS GmbH, is based in the city.
The drone, weighing 19 kilograms, has a length of 2.40 meters and can fly at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, covering a 12-minute test route that would take around 40 minutes by car. The drone's speed and battery life are suitable for its current operations, ensuring efficient and timely deliveries.
The drone's route is carefully planned to avoid traffic jams and construction sites, reducing transport times by up to 60%. However, it does not yet fly completely autonomously and requires human intervention for route adjustments when obstacles appear. To ensure constant reception, the drone is equipped with three SIM cards.
The cargo, which consists of blood samples, must arrive safely at its destination. These samples are ideally evaluated within a maximum of four hours after collection. The service, operated by specialist doctor Thomas Kirchner, owner of the Medical Laboratory Ostsachsen, saves time and personnel, according to Kirchner himself.
Approximately 50 blood samples are flown daily from 14 practices in Dippoldiswalde, Altenberg, and Glashütte to Dresden by drone. The service is monitored by an experienced pilot, Matea Zivkovic, from Croatia.
German Copters DLS GmbH plans to fly numerous new individual routes and cover the entire Free State of Saxony in the future. The test route between the Ore Mountains and the state capital has been successful and is paving the way for much larger projects. The ultimate goal is for the drone service to supply the entire Free State.
This innovative drone service is a testament to Dresden's commitment to technological advancement and efficiency. The vision for the future is direct delivery to the window of the respective laboratory, further streamlining the process and saving even more time.
