Affordable alcohol now available at Lidl as drinking expenses rise across various regions
In recent years, the costs of grocery shopping have been on the rise in our country. According to consumer centres, this trend is largely due to the Corona pandemic, the Ukraine war, crop failures, and higher costs for raw materials, energy, and personnel.
One of the most affected categories is food. Since 2020, food prices have risen sharply, with particularly high price increases for certain items. Olive oil, for instance, has seen a 113 percent increase, while sugar, cookies, sunflower or rapeseed oil, and other products have experienced increases of up to 83 and 63 percent respectively.
The inflation has also affected the price of butter, which increased significantly between February 2024 and February 2025, by 27.9 percent. Fruit prices have risen by 4.0 percent, vegetables by 3.9 percent, and other dairy products by 3.7 percent. Bread and grain products increased by 1.1 percent, while meat and meat products increased by a mere 0.2 percent.
Amidst these rising costs, there are still ways to save. Lidl, for example, continues to offer good prices for drinks during weekly grocery shopping. Shopping with a list and cooking at home as much as possible is also advised to help manage costs. Consumers are also urged to be cautious of price traps and compare products in supermarkets and discount stores.
Unfortunately, it seems that even popular drinks are increasingly becoming luxury items. The price of beer in Germany, for instance, has been generally rising in 2025, with the consumer price index increasing to 124 in February 2025, indicating a strong upward trend in recent months. Additionally, soft drink prices like Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite are increasing again from September 2025.
Public transport users also have to pay more, as costs continue to rise across various sectors. In February 2025, food prices showed one of the highest price increases in over a year, highlighting the ongoing struggle for consumers to manage their budgets.
Despite these challenges, it's important for consumers to remain vigilant and make informed decisions when shopping for groceries. By comparing prices, choosing wisely, and cooking at home as much as possible, consumers can help mitigate the impact of rising food prices on their household budgets.
