In the picturesque town of Lens, Hauts-de-France, on January 21, 2020, a significant step was taken towards shaping the future of Europe. The "Lens Declaration" was adopted by the ministers of France, Germany, and Poland, marking the renewal of the Weimar Triangle's commitment to a strong, sovereign, democratic, and just Europe.

The Weimar Triangle, comprising France, Germany, and Poland, has identified numerous areas of common interest where they wish to cooperate more closely, particularly focusing on ensuring the well-being of citizens without leaving anyone behind. They have pledged to work together to foster a Europe that is not only prosperous but also sustainable, as they commit to combating climate change, aiming to make Europe climate-neutral by 2050.

One of the key strategies to achieve this goal is the consideration of a carbon border adjustment mechanism at the borders of the European Union. This mechanism would help ensure a level playing field for European industries while promoting the transition to climate neutrality.

The Weimar Triangle also supports a strong and renewed European competition policy and enforcement framework, recognising the importance of fair competition in promoting prosperity, convergence, and competitiveness within the EU. To this end, they call for the further deepening and strengthening of the internal market, requiring the removal of remaining unjustified barriers.

The trio has also shown a keen interest in the European Union's long-term strategy for fighting climate change. They have reaffirmed their commitment to the EU's pledge to submit this strategy by the beginning of 2020 and to update its climate contributions.

In addition, the Weimar Triangle has emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law, non-discrimination, and equal treatment of all member states. Discussions on a "Periodic Peer Review Mechanism" for this purpose should continue among all member states.

The Weimar Triangle also reaffirms its commitment to the enlargement of the EU and supports a European perspective for the Western Balkans. They have also called for the strengthening of the southern dimension of the European Neighborhood Policy.

The trio has proposed the European Battery Alliance model for integrated European value chains in strategic sectors. This model aims to create a competitive and sustainable European industrial base.

Lastly, the Weimar Triangle has committed to continuing dialogue and close cooperation within the format of the Weimar Triangle, and will make an active contribution to the Conference on the Future of Europe. They are planning a new program for the next five years to strengthen Europe, protect its core values, and deliver tangible results.

In summary, the Lens Declaration serves as a roadmap for a stronger, greener, and more inclusive Europe. The Weimar Triangle's commitment to these principles demonstrates a shared vision for the future of Europe and a determination to face the challenges ahead together.
