Agreement Reached for Pioneering Cleanup Method to Combat Underground Gas Leaks in Missouri Caverns
The Meramec Caverns, a popular tourist attraction in Missouri, has reopened its doors following a temporary closure. The closure was voluntary, as the privately owned caverns needed time to reduce TCE levels to safe standards.
The reopening is a result of a settlement agreement between the caverns and TRW, a company whose automotive production site at 2525 Walton Road, St. Louis, Missouri, was found to be contributing to the TCE vapor contamination in the Meramec Caverns. As part of the agreement, TRW is now responsible for removing vapor contamination from the toured portions of the Meramec Caverns.
To ensure the safety of visitors and the protection of the cavern's ecology, various actions have been taken. These include the installation of air lock doors, extensive airflow studies, the use of air scrubbers, and cave venting equipment, which comes equipped with a backup generator in case of electrical power failure.
The ongoing removal action has also led to studies being conducted to measure the impact of these actions on the ecology of the Meramec Caverns. For those interested in learning more about the work being performed at the Meramec Caverns, information can be found on the LaJolla Spring Cave Complex - Meramec Caverns Web page.
To stay informed about the TCE levels within the caverns, ongoing sampling will continue to ensure they remain at safe levels. For more information, interested parties can contact James D. Stevens or Karissa Orris through their respective contact information.
With the necessary actions taken and the caverns now safe for visitors, the Meramec Caverns once again welcomes tourists to explore its fascinating underground world.
