AI assistant, ChatGPT, introduces study buddy feature
In a significant move aimed at refining ChatGPT as a learning platform, OpenAI has launched a new feature called Study Mode. This initiative was announced on Tuesday, 20th March, 2023.
The development of Study Mode was prompted by the extensive use of ChatGPT in academic environments. The feature is designed to engage users with questions and challenges, cultivating critical thinking skills.
OpenAI emphasizes that the successful implementation of Study Mode relies on the user's commitment to learning, requiring active engagement with the material. Study Mode is available for logged-in users across various ChatGPT subscription tiers, including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans.
Edu subscriptions, primarily catering to younger users within educational institutions, are expected to gain access to Study Mode in the coming weeks. However, the specific rollout date has not been announced beyond 2025.
The introduction of Study Mode comes amidst concerns regarding ChatGPT's potential impact on critical thinking abilities. A research paper published in June 2023 revealed diminished brain activity among individuals using ChatGPT for essay composition.
OpenAI anticipates sharing further information regarding student utilization of generative AI in their education. Meanwhile, Anthropic, another AI company, released a comparable feature, Learning Mode, for its AI chatbot, Claude, in April.
It's worth noting that the use of ChatGPT in academic environments has been a topic of discussion, with some raising concerns about its impact on critical thinking abilities. However, with the introduction of Study Mode, OpenAI aims to address these concerns and transform ChatGPT into an enhanced learning resource.
