AI-crafted historical display by Trump showcases fabricated quotes attributed to AI-forged Founding Fathers
In the heart of Washington D.C., a new history exhibit, the Founders Museum, has been commissioned by the White House. The museum, created by the far-right "education" group PragerU, has stirred up a storm of controversy, with critics arguing that it could lead to a distorted view of American history and potentially a dumber, more fascist nation.
The exhibit, which is set to open in the lead-up to the semiquincentennial celebration (250th anniversary) in 2026, features 82 paintings and 40 AI videos. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is featured in a promotional video on PragerU's website for the exhibit. However, critics have pointed out several instances of AI-generated distortions and anomalies, including figures with either too many or too few fingers.
One such example is the portrayal of Christopher Columbus, who is depicted scolding children about slavery, stating, "Being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no?" Another instance is a fake quote from AI-generated John Adams, who is depicted saying, "facts do not care about our feelings." This quote, popularized in the 2010s by far-right influencers like Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk, is historically inaccurate as the term "troublemaker" did not exist until four decades after Adams's death.
PragerU's founder, Dennis Prager, often talks about spreading "Judeo-Christian values." The exhibit presents a heavy emphasis on God, with plenty of mentions throughout. However, the Founders Museum has also been criticized for presenting a distorted view of America's founding, with anachronistic quotes attributed to John Adams that include modern phrases and ideas that did not exist in his time, such as references to "globalism," "socialism," and contemporary political concepts.
PragerU's learning materials have been approved for use in public schools in at least ten states, including Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. This has raised concerns about the influence of PragerU's ideology on the nation's youth.
Donald Trump has previously criticized the Smithsonian, calling it "out of control," and has complained about discussions on slavery in American history. It remains to be seen whether the Founders Museum will face similar criticism.
McMahon insists that the new exhibit's "patriotic education does not mean propaganda." However, the controversy surrounding the Founders Museum has led many to question the accuracy and appropriateness of the exhibit's portrayal of American history. As the nation grapples with complex issues of identity and values, the Founders Museum raises important questions about the role of education in shaping our understanding of the past and our vision for the future.
