AI Developer OpenAI Announces Recruitment Tool Leveraging Artificial Intelligence Technology
In an effort to prepare for the impending disruption of jobs due to AI, OpenAI, the leading AI research company, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at equipping workers with the necessary skills and connecting them with AI-driven opportunities.
The cornerstone of these initiatives is the launch of the OpenAI Jobs Platform, set to go live around mid-2026. This platform is designed to serve not only big tech firms but also small businesses and local governments, connecting workers with jobs based on their skills.
Fidji Simo, the head of applications at OpenAI, has been spearheading these efforts. Simo, who previously served as the CEO of the American online grocery delivery service Instacart, is now responsible for productization at OpenAI. In a recent interview, Simo acknowledged that AI will indeed disrupt jobs but emphasised OpenAI's commitment to softening the impact by teaching AI skills and helping people find jobs.
The OpenAI Jobs Platform will be complemented by AI fluency certifications, which will start as a pilot in late 2025 or early 2026. These certifications, to be rolled out through OpenAI's Academy, will cover basic AI use, smart prompts, and custom AI job skills.
Two hypothetical individuals, Luis and Sara, serve as examples of the potential impact of these initiatives. Luis, a city planner, gets certified and lands a job advising a town using AI to improve commuter routes. Sara, a barista, learns AI skills through the OpenAI Academy and gets certified to train staff with smart tools.
Walmart, a key partner in the certification program, aims to train and certify up to 10 million Americans by 2030. By this same target, OpenAI hopes to certify up to 10 million Americans as well.
In a bid to address potential AI bias in hiring tools, OpenAI will use AI to match businesses' needs with workers' skills, rather than simply scraping resumes. This approach is expected to ensure a fair and effective hiring process for all.
Training for these certifications can be undertaken using ChatGPT, OpenAI's popular AI model, making the learning process accessible and convenient for many.
