AI giant, OpenAI, announces the launch of its AI data center initiative in Norway, named Stargate.

OpenAI, in partnership with Nscale and Aker, has announced the creation of Stargate Norway, a new AI data center located in Norway. The facility, which aims to bolster AI capabilities in Europe, is set to be built near Narvik, a town in northern Norway.

The joint venture between Nscale and Aker is a significant step towards enhancing AI infrastructure in Europe. The European Union has plans for substantial investments in this area, with €10 billion earmarked for 13 AI factories and an initial investment of €20 billion.

OpenAI has chosen the location due to its access to hydropower, cool climate, and mature industrial base. The data center will operate entirely on renewable power sources, aligning with strict environmental regulations such as the EU AI Act and Energy Efficiency Directive.

Stargate Norway will initially provide an capacity of 230 MW, expanding to 290 MW. OpenAI has committed to utilizing the data center's resources once operational. Nscale will oversee the design and construction of the facility, with OpenAI acting as an off-taker.

To ensure maximum efficiency, OpenAI plans to implement closed-loop, direct-to-chip liquid cooling. The excess heat generated by the GPU systems will be repurposed to support low-carbon enterprises in the surrounding region.

The project is independent from EU AI infrastructure initiatives. OpenAI's recent announcement follows the launch of Stargate UAE and a recent agreement with the UK government to accelerate AI adoption and enhance infrastructure.

By the end of 2026, Stargate Norway is projected to operate using 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, significantly enhancing AI computing power. This move comes after OpenAI's recent commitment of $500 billion to AI infrastructure in the United States, partnering with Oracle and SoftBank.

The data centers exceeding specific energy input thresholds must recover waste heat according to regulations. Stargate Norway, with its focus on minimizing environmental impact, is set to make a positive contribution to Europe's AI landscape while adhering to these standards.
