AI-Powered Data Navigator: Classifying Flow by Function and Industry
In a groundbreaking move, Cloudflare Radar has introduced new features that provide insights into the increasing dominance of AI bots in the Computer and Electronics industry. The most active bot, GPTBot, has been dethroned by Amazonbot, which now ranks second, with both bots accounting for over 40% of crawling traffic.
To better understand the impact of these AI bots on the industry, Cloudflare Radar has introduced the crawl-to-refer ratio. This ratio compares the number of crawling requests from a platform to the actual page views mediated by human traffic.
The new features also allow users to filter traffic by industries and verticals in the "Data Explorer" view. This provides a perspective on how crawling patterns and traffic referrals compare to peer groups. For instance, in the News and Publications industry, the crawl-to-refer ratios are lower than in the standard view.
Another significant finding is that Anthropic, developer of the leading AI platform Claude, has the highest crawl-to-refer ratio, almost 50,000:1. This means that for every million crawls by AI bots, publishers receive approximately 20 visitors.
The purpose of the crawling chart in Cloudflare Radar breaks down traffic trends by purpose, with training traffic making up nearly 80% of AI bot crawls. Other use cases for AI crawls include building indexes for AI search functions, crawling on direct request, and undeclared crawlers without a stated purpose.
The data can also be broken down from AI bots and crawlers by verticals and industries. Users can filter traffic by these categories in the Cloudflare Radar dashboard. They can also break down the data by User-Agent and filter by Crawl Purpose to examine traffic trends across a larger group of bots.
Traffic trends by AI crawler for websites within the cryptocurrency industry under the Finance vertical can be viewed in the "Data Explorer" view. A daily cycle is visible in the usage of ChatGPT, with usage gradually increasing over the month.
The company that developed the chatbot Claude, which stands out as a leading AI platform, is the US-based firm Anthropic. If "User action" is selected, ChatGPT-User from OpenAI is responsible for nearly three-quarters of the request traffic for this crawler group.
Cloudflare's new features come as a response to concerns about AI bots accessing content without providing publishers with significant traffic. The summary given by Cloudflare regarding this issue is "No clicks, no visitors, and no ad revenue."
These new features offer a valuable tool for publishers and industry analysts to understand the impact of AI bots on their traffic and revenue. As AI continues to evolve, it is crucial to monitor its impact on various industries and the broader internet ecosystem.
