Aid flights from Germany to Gaza have commenced
The Gaza Strip, currently on the brink of famine, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis due to an Israeli-imposed siege and blockade that began in early 2025. This crisis has led to widespread food insecurity, fuel shortages, malnutrition, and the collapse of essential services.
Israel has controlled all access to the Mediterranean coastal region for several months, only allowing a few aid deliveries to pass. This has exacerbated the already dire situation in Gaza, with the majority of victims being women, minors, and the elderly. The health authority controlled by Hamas reported that over 60,000 Palestinians have died in the past nearly 22 months, with a further 145,000 people injured.
In response, the German government has taken action. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) is urging the Israeli government to enable the UN and international aid organizations to secure access and distribution of aid supplies. To this end, Germany has increased aid to the Gaza Strip by up to almost 31 million euros in May, and has provided an additional 5 million euros to the UN World Food Program WFP for aid in the region.
Recently, German transport aircraft dropped 34 pallets containing nearly 14 tons of food and medical supplies over the area. This aid will support bakeries and soup kitchens to provide food and warm meals for the people of Gaza in the long term. The German Armed Forces have also begun an aid operation for distressed people in the Gaza Strip.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) stated that the aid flights could only contribute a very small part and bring the most necessary things to the people. However, he emphasized that every bit of help matters in a crisis of this magnitude.
The German government is also funding a field hospital of the Order of Malta in Gaza City. Despite the operational constraints, humanitarian organizations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the Red Cross are providing nutrition, water, and medical services on the ground.
Aid workers consider airdrops of aid supplies from the air to be ineffective and expensive due to the relatively small quantities and potential harm to people on the ground. Instead, they advocate for allowing as many food and aid supplies as possible into the Gaza Strip to prevent misuse.
The crisis in the Gaza Strip is one of the most severe humanitarian emergencies in recent history. Calls for immediate and expanded access to Gaza are growing louder, with UN experts and aid agencies urging for action to prevent famine and mass starvation. The situation remains extremely precarious, and urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian aid and cessation of hostilities is necessary to restore basic services and save lives.
