Aid transport for Libya: THW delivers essential supplies following the floods in Libya

In the wake of the devastating floods in Libya, the Technical Relief Organisation (THW) of Germany has declared several regions in the country as disaster areas. The THW, the federal voluntary emergency service in Germany, is deploying aid supplies to the affected regions.

Following a request for international aid from Libya, the THW is working in collaboration with the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism and UN organisations to deliver much-needed relief. The aid supply delivery is being funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

The Bavarian transport team, consisting of 15 volunteer THW members from various regions, will be responsible for transporting the aid supplies. The aid delivery includes 100 tents with lighting, 1,000 field beds, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 sleeping mats, and 80 power generators. A portion of the aid supplies will be transported by truck and trailer from the Bavarian THW logistics center in Obernburg to an airport.

The loading of the aid supplies will begin at 6:00 PM, and the transport team will set off for the airport overnight. The first aid shipment is scheduled to depart from the airport on September 6, 2023.

The THW provides specialist knowledge and diverse experiences, making it a sought-after supporter for various services like the fire service, police, and aid organizations. The organisation is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government.

The Mediterranean storm "Daniel" caused heavy rainfall and flooding in Libya, resulting in over 5,300 reported deaths and thousands of people still missing. Libya has been declared a disaster area, with many people in need of immediate aid.
