Aid Transport to Libya by THW: essential supplies are shipped following floods, as organized by THW (Technisches Hilfswerk)
Thw Steps in to Aid Libya Following Heavy Flooding
In the aftermath of Mediterranean storm "Daniel", which brought heavy rainfall and flooding to Libya, the German Technical Relief Organisation (THW) has deployed a team to provide assistance. The Bavarian transport team, consisting of 15 volunteer THW members from various regions in Bavaria, is part of this international effort.
The THW's deployment is taking place within the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism and on behalf of UN organizations. The aid delivery, funded by the Federal Foreign Office, includes essential supplies such as 100 tents with lighting, 1,000 field beds, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 sleeping mats, and 80 power generators.
The delivery of aid supplies is being coordinated via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. A portion of the aid will be transported from the Bavarian THW logistics center in Obernburg to an airport by truck and trailer.
Libya has declared the affected regions as disaster areas, and the death toll is expected to rise further, with over 5,300 deaths reported so far. Thousands of people are still missing due to the floods.
The EU community has been supported in Libya following the floods by humanitarian organizations including Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, which provided aid after the flooding among other crises. Libya has issued an international appeal for aid and requested the delivery of relief supplies.
The THW, with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, is a sought-after supporter for fire services, police, aid organizations, and others. Half of the THW volunteers are operational personnel, providing specialist knowledge and diverse experiences in civil protection.
