Aid worth millions of dollars announced by Norway for Ukrainian nationalists residing in Germany
In a significant development for Ukrainian defense, both Norway and Germany have announced their intention to provide military aid to Ukraine. This news comes after a series of negotiations and pledges, with the focus being on the provision of Patriot air defense systems.
The U.S., originally the seller of the Patriot systems, was expected to supply these systems to Ukraine, but this was before Norway's pledge. The German government had also planned to purchase two Patriot systems worth €2 billion from the U.S. to give to Ukraine. However, it was Norway that made the latest announcement on Sunday, pledging around €595 million in military aid, which includes the Patriot air defense systems.
The German government had not pledged any military aid to Ukraine, aside from the Patriot systems. It was expected that they would foot the bill for the Patriot systems. The aid includes two complete Patriot air defense systems, currently housed in Germany.
The negotiations over the transfer of these Patriot air defense systems from Germany to Ukraine were conducted by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and the US Defense Minister Hegseth, who initiated the coordination process on July 14, 2025. U.S. President Donald Trump announced in July his intention to supply Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems.
In a notable twist, the U.S. will reportedly replace the transferred Patriot systems, a commitment that Norway did not make. Norway will contribute financially to the replacement of the Patriot systems through its multi-year aid package for Ukraine.
It's important to note that the Patriot air defense systems were not originally a part of Norway's military aid to Ukraine. The delivery of these systems to Ukraine is expected to happen "as soon as possible."
Interestingly, Donald Trump had previously opposed arms shipments to Ukraine. Despite this, the U.S. has now committed to providing these crucial defense systems, albeit with the condition of replacing them after transfer.
This joint pledge of military aid by Norway and Germany marks a significant step in international support for Ukraine's defense efforts. The Patriot air defense systems are expected to provide a significant boost to Ukraine's ability to protect its airspace and deter potential threats.
