Frankfurt Airport to Get a New Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge
Good news for commuters in Frankfurt am Main! A new pedestrian and cyclist bridge is set to be constructed over the A3 highway, connecting Frankfurt Airport terminals with the Gateway Gardens business district.
The bridge, which will be approximately 76 meters long with wave-shaped outer elements, is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2027. This new infrastructure is aimed at making it easier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians to navigate the busy airport area.
Currently, cyclists and pedestrians find it challenging to navigate a safe route through Frankfurt Airport due to ramps, tunnels, and exits. The new bridge will eliminate this issue, providing a direct walking or cycling connection between the passenger terminals and the business district.
Fraport, the operating company of Frankfurt Airport, is responsible for the construction of the bridge. The project is estimated to cost around five million euros, with the federal government funding 75% of the cost as announced by Fraport.
The bridge will save users from having to navigate through eight traffic lights, making it a more efficient and environmentally friendly option for those choosing to cycle or walk.
Frankfurt Airport, located in a central and traffic-friendly location, is a major hub with over 60 million passengers and around 80,000 employees. The airport is already well-connected to the transportation network via ICE and regional train station, two major highways, a bus terminal, federal, state, and local roads.
Many people commute by bike, especially in the warmer months, according to Fraport. The addition of the new bridge will make it even more accessible for cyclists to travel to and from the airport, further promoting sustainable transportation options.
There is currently no information available on the company responsible for renovating the pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the A3 motorway connecting the airport terminals and Gateway Gardens.
The new bridge is a significant step towards improving the infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians in Frankfurt am Main, making it a more bike-friendly city and promoting sustainable transportation options. Stay tuned for more updates on the construction progress of the new bridge.
