Airborne Seat of Desirable Exclusivity Scoffed at by Health Professional
In an interview, Simon Greenberg, CEO of AI healthcare startup Medidex, has highlighted that aisle seats on airplanes pose the greatest risk for germ exposure. Greenberg, a health expert, stated that travel can compromise one's immune system due to stress, dehydration, disrupted sleep patterns, and increased susceptibility to infections.
Greenberg explained that aisle seats offer more human contact overall, making them a hotspot for germ transmission. Passengers frequently grab the headrest of the aisle seat, leaving behind germs, and the constant activity on a plane creates air currents that can carry these germs to aisle passengers.
Moreover, if an aisle seat is near the bathroom, it can expose passengers to additional germs due to the constant opening and shutting of the bathroom door. Greenberg noted that extra activities like trips to the bathroom or chasing a toddler down the aisle increase germ exposure.
However, Greenberg's statement suggests that middle and window seats may have less germ exposure compared to aisle seats. Window seat passengers have significantly less contact with other travelers and reduce exposure to respiratory droplets from passing passengers. The middle seat, despite being uncomfortable, is better in terms of reduced germ exposure compared to the aisle seat.
To prevent illness while traveling, Greenberg suggests staying hydrated and avoiding touching one's face, nose, eyes, and mouth. He also recommends bringing sanitizing wipes and wearing a mask, especially during the ongoing pandemic when germ exposure has increased on planes.
Passengers walking past an aisle seat become potential sources of germ exposure. Greenberg notes that a little preparation, such as using sanitizing wipes and wearing a mask, can help mitigate this risk.
Boarding a plane, especially during cold and flu season, exposes passengers to a tin can full of everyone else's germs. However, Greenberg emphasized that with a bit of caution and preparation, travelers can minimize their risk of falling ill during their journey.
