Airbus Boosts Innovation and Technology by Investing in IPR for Enhancing Canada's Strategic Tanker Transport Programme's Capabilities

Airbus Defence and Space has made a strategic financial investment in Quebec-based IPR Innovative Products Resources Inc. (IPR), marking a significant step forward in the collaboration between the two companies. The exact size of the investment has not been disclosed publicly, but it is expected to drive IPR's research and development, fostering new intellectual property and creating high-tech jobs.

IPR's collaboration with Airbus and Airbus subsidiary Testia is aimed at delivering cutting-edge structural health monitoring and sensing technologies. These technologies, which monitor loading history and fatigue damage in aircraft, vessels, structures, and machinery, are intended to benefit not only the aerospace industry but also vital infrastructure sectors across Canada and beyond.

Airbus has a significant presence in Canada, employing over 5,000 people, with over 4,000 in Quebec, at ten sites and offices. This investment supports Airbus' commitments under Canada's Industrial and Technological Benefits (ITB) Policy as part of the Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) acquisition programme.

The STTC fleet, which is designed to replace Canada's aging CC-150 Polaris (A310 MRTT) fleet, includes four new Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and the conversion of five used A330-200s. This fleet is designed to support air-to-air refuelling operations, military personnel and cargo airlift, medical evacuations, as well as strategic transport of Government of Canada officials.

Testia, a leader in structural integrity services, will support the development and certification of these aerospace solutions. IPR plans to extend its innovations to critical infrastructure sectors beyond aerospace, including roads, bridges, power plants, railways, oil and gas facilities, heavy equipment, and machinery.

The collaboration is set to accelerate the development of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), a category of sensing technology that is crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of aerospace solutions and infrastructure. This investment from Airbus will continue to support IPR's efforts to increase innovation capacity and bring novel ideas to market.

Airbus generates over C$2.5 billion in annual revenues for more than 850 Canadian companies. This investment is a testament to Airbus' commitment to Canada and its aerospace industry, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the Canadian economy.

In conclusion, the strategic investment by Airbus Defence and Space in IPR Innovative Products Resources Inc. is a significant step forward in the development of cutting-edge structural health monitoring and sensing technologies. This collaboration is expected to benefit not only the aerospace industry but also vital infrastructure sectors across Canada and beyond.
