Airline crew members participate in a ballot deciding on potential work stoppage at Lufthansa
Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, is facing a potential strike by its pilots, as the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union conducts a strike vote. The voting period begins next Friday, 12.9., and will continue until the end of September.
The current negotiations between Lufthansa and the VC have resulted in a failed agreement on occupational pensions. The VC had urged Lufthansa in May to negotiate on operational pensions and transition pensions, but Lufthansa failed to present a serious offer during seven rounds of talks, according to VC president Andreas Pinheiro.
Pinheiro stated that Lufthansa consistently blocks and stonewalls during negotiations, refusing to compromise. He added that the airline's unwillingness to engage in compromise has marked the negotiations.
The strike vote involves around 4,800 employees of Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo. If the vote passes, it remains uncertain whether there will be another pilots' strike at Lufthansa following the current ballot. However, no new strike action is planned until after the end of the ballot, as previously stated.
The last pilots' strike at Lufthansa was organized by the VC in 2022 at Lufthansa's main company. The strike vote is expected to take place at Lufthansa on next Friday, 12.9.
Dr. Andreas Pinheiro, the chairman of the pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit, is leading the strike vote. He emphasised that the VC is committed to reaching a fair agreement with Lufthansa, but the airline's refusal to compromise has left the union with no choice but to consider strike action.
As the strike vote unfolds, Lufthansa passengers and employees are closely monitoring the situation. The outcome of the vote could have significant implications for the airline and its operations. The VC and Lufthansa have been invited to continue negotiations in an effort to reach a resolution and avoid potential disruptions.
