"Akio's Inspiring Statement on Toyota's Smart City Initiative: Woven City"
In a historic moment, Toyota announced the Woven City project on January 6, 2020, at CES in Las Vegas. The visionary city, planned for research and development of new technologies, is being constructed at the base of Mt. Fuji.
Akio Toyoda, the CEO of Toyota, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the hard work and effort put into the project. He has faced numerous challenges during his time as CEO, including recessions, recalls, earthquakes, and tsunamis. However, these challenges have only strengthened his determination to build the Woven City.
The Woven City project focuses on testing and developing technologies such as autonomy, robotics, and AI. Toyota is supported by ZF in the development of this city of the future. The aim is to create a place where people can live, work, and play in a real-world living laboratory.
During the groundbreaking ceremony on February 23, 2021, which is "Mt. Fuji Day" in Japan, Akio Toyoda introduced James Kuffner, CEO of Woven Planet Holdings, Daisuke Toyoda, Senior Vice President, and Bjarke Ingels, a Danish architect who is designing the city.
The video message for partners, released to commemorate the groundbreaking ceremony, features Akio Toyoda discussing the progress and goals of the Woven City project. The team members also share their passion for the project, explaining the potential of Woven City from their perspectives.
Akio Toyoda believes that as a global society, they need to come together to heal, grow, learn, and create new possibilities for the future. He expressed pride in what Toyota has become and believes it can do more. Toyota embraces the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations and hopes the Woven City will provide a unique opportunity to create technology that will help achieve these goals.
However, the Woven City project has faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, the project continues to move forward, driven by the passion and determination of those involved.
Akio Toyoda expressed his gratitude once again, thanking everyone for their hard work and effort, and looking forward to the future of the Woven City. The video message concludes with a hopeful note, as Akio Toyoda expresses his belief that the Woven City will be a beacon of innovation and progress, shaping the future of cities and society.
