Alcohol addiction confessed by Ben Zucker, yet he refuses to quit drinking - Alcohol addiction confessed by Ben Zucker, yet stubborn about quitting his drinking habit
In the heart of Berlin, singer Ben Zucker, 42, is taking a bold step towards self-discovery and recovery. Zucker has openly acknowledged his struggle with alcoholism, a battle that has been a silent companion for him over the past year.
The corona pandemic, with its accompanying uncertainty and high professional demands, marked the beginning of Zucker's downward spiral. He found solace in excessive drinking, a coping mechanism that soon spiralled out of control. This continued for several months, until he realised the need for help.
Zucker sought medical help and spent 21 days in a clinic for alcohol detox. During his stay, he was part of a therapy group that included entrepreneurs, lawyers, and doctors, among others, all battling similar demons.
Despite the challenges, Zucker remains hopeful. He identifies himself as both an alcoholic and alcohol-dependent, but is not yet ready to completely give up alcohol. He struggles with controlling his consumption, especially when it comes to vodka.
Zucker's health, so far, has not been negatively affected by his alcoholism. However, he fears that continued consumption could lead to negative health effects, specifically liver damage. He states that the word "alcoholic" does not signify a lack of hope, but a call to action.
Zucker's struggles have not been without personal consequences. His fiancée Suzann Jetzkus, who tried to help him during his struggle, ultimately could not overcome the issues caused by his alcohol use. They had planned a secret wedding in 2021 but broke up afterward, with a brief reconciliation in 2023 before splitting for good.
The pandemic also claimed another victim - Zucker's second arena tour was canceled. Despite these setbacks, Zucker remains resilient, focusing on his recovery and understanding his relationship with alcohol.
Zucker's open acknowledgement of his struggle serves as a reminder that many people with similar problems do not admit their struggles. His journey towards recovery is a testament to the power of seeking help and the importance of self-awareness.
