Alert for Borussia Düsseldorf Issued by Singapore
Dang Qiu, the world-ranked 10th table tennis player, had a mixed performance at the recent Singapore Smash tournament. In the singles event, he faced Alexis Lebrun, the 14th-ranked French player, and despite assessing him as a strong contender, Qiu lost the match 2-4.
However, Qiu remains optimistic about future encounters with Lebrun, believing that smarter decisions and better play could lead to a different outcome. Unfortunately, Qiu's singles run at the tournament ended in the round of eight.
In the doubles event, Qiu partnered with Benedikt Duda, but they suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat against the Lebrun brothers, who currently hold the number one spot in the world rankings for doubles. Duda also lost his doubles match at the tournament.
Despite these setbacks, Qiu is satisfied with his overall performance at the Singapore Smash, considering it a good start to the year and a good tournament overall. He won against Yi-Hsin Feng (WR 49), Shunsuke Togami (WR 23), and Khanak Jha (WR 56) before losing in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Borussia, the German table tennis club, is gearing up for the Champions League quarter-final return leg against Alliance Nimes/Montpellier TT on February 16. After losing the away leg at the Mediterranean coast 3-0, Borussia's players will face immense pressure, as they must secure a 3-1 victory in the lion's den and then triumph in the "Golden Match" to reach the Final Four.
According to the regulations of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), Borussia must win at least two matches in the return leg to progress.
In a separate development, Anton Källberg (WR 16) of Borussia had a successful run at the tournament, defeating Izaak Quek (WR 82) and Maharu Yoshimura (WR 37) before losing to world number one Wang Chuqin.
The Lebrun brothers, Alexis (WR 14) and Felix (WR 4), who are French and play for Montpellier, demonstrated their skill with the lightweight table tennis ball at the tournament. The match between Borussia and Montpellier will take place at the Arag Center Court at Staufenplatz.
Qiu, who became a father four weeks prior to the tournament, attributes Duda's loss to a poor performance and being off his usual rhythm due to the joyous event. Nevertheless, Borussia is determined to overcome the challenges ahead and secure a spot in the Champions League Final Four.
