Alligator Prison Remains Active

In the heart of Miami, Florida, a controversial detention center, nicknamed the "Alcatraz of the Alligators," continues to operate despite a recent order to close. The name, a playful reference to the infamous island prison in San Francisco Bay, stems from the detention center's geographical location near alligator-infested marshes.

The detention center, established in just one week in June, was built on an abandoned airfield in the Everglades marsh region. However, its construction was carried out without the necessary environmental impact studies, according to environmental protection organizations.

The legal action against the operation of the "Alcatraz of Alligators" was initiated by two environmental protection organizations. Animal rights organizations, including the Humane Society and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), have also voiced their concerns.

The Trump administration is appealing the closure of the detention center, a move being handled by a panel of three judges from an appeals court. Despite an order issued by a Florida district judge two weeks ago, the detention center remains operational.

The order stated that the Trump administration could not accept new migrants at the center and had to remove much of its equipment within 60 days. However, the center is still operational, with migrants sharing cells housing around 30 people, enduring sweltering heat during the day and freezing temperatures at night, and being plagued by ever-present mosquitoes, according to accounts from detainees to AFP.

One migrant, Luis Gonzales, described the conditions as torture. The organizations arguing against the detention center claim that it threatens the fragile ecosystem of the surrounding marshes.

In the past, Donald Trump jokingly referred to the alligators in the neighboring marshes as guards for the detention center before it opened. The Trump administration's appeal of the closure order adds another layer to the ongoing controversy surrounding the "Alcatraz of the Alligators."
