Allocated €33 million for combating cyber risks in Latvia
Latvia has taken a significant step forward in bolstering its national security, as the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a series of projects aimed at enhancing both cyberspace and physical infrastructure defences.
The initiative, led primarily by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (Bundesinnenministerium), is part of Latvia's broader national security efforts and is supported by the government. The projects will adhere to the requirements of the National Cybersecurity Law and related regulatory frameworks.
Inga Bērziņa, Minister for Smart Administration and Regional Development, affirmed Latvia's status as a reliable partner in the European and NATO security landscape. She stated that these investments are essential for national security and will enhance Latvia's defence against external threats.
The projects are subject to the oversight of the Ministry of Defence and CERT.LV, underscoring the importance of coordination in safeguarding national cybersecurity interests. Project applicants will need to coordinate with these entities to ensure alignment with national cybersecurity objectives.
One of the key projects is the development of a concept called "Cyberdome" for semi-automated network defence. This initiative aims to reduce or prevent damage from cyberattacks. The Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) will also participate in an exercise to test communication systems cooperation in crisis.
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), under the Interior Ministry, will play a central role in IT security efforts, supporting federal authorities and developing security standards. The government has recently approved laws to implement the EU NIS-2 Directive as part of strengthening cybersecurity in the administration, which involve these ministries.
Notably, the initiative is EU-funded, demonstrating the commitment of the European Union to supporting Latvia's security efforts. Minister Bērziņa highlighted the importance of these investments, stating that they will help secure Latvia's digital future and maintain its position as a reliable partner in the European and NATO security landscape.
The government-approved project list will guide the support provided to the projects, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to achieve the desired outcomes. With these investments, Latvia is taking a proactive approach to safeguarding its national security in the digital age.
