Alpinist from Belarus gone missing on Mount Elbrus
A Belarusian mountaineer, Pavel Kaverin, has gone missing during an ascent of Mount Tereskolok, located on the southeastern ridge of Elbrus at an altitude of 3800 meters. Emergency services specialists have been dispatched to search for the missing climber, but as of now, no information on whether he has been found has been provided.
This incident marks the second time in recent months that Belarusian tourists have encountered trouble on Elbrus. In May 2023, six Belarusian tourists attempted to conquer Elbrus, and they stopped making contact two days later. Fortunately, they were later found and evacuated by rescuers.
The search operation for Pavel Kaverin is proving to be challenging due to the complex mountain terrain and poor weather conditions, including strong wind and snowfall. To aid in the search, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) has deployed over 80 rescuers, 24 units of equipment, an unmanned aerial vehicle, and a helicopter.
Pavel Kaverin arrived in Kabardino-Balkaria and began his climb without registering his expedition with the MChS, which is a required step for any climbers attempting to scale Elbrus. The evacuated mountaineers from the previous incident required psychological assistance after spending two days in harsh conditions, and it is likely that Pavel Kaverin may also need similar support if he is found.
At this time, the focus remains on the search and rescue efforts for Pavel Kaverin, and we hope for a positive outcome. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
