Minsk Introduces Bank Card Payment System for Buses
In an exciting development for public transportation in Minsk, Belarus, the city is set to launch a new bank card payment system for buses later this September. The first bus to be equipped with this new technology will operate on city route No. 1, with line 60 being the likely first to adopt the payment options via bank cards and mobile phones.
The payment devices installed on Minsk buses will be capable of reading both bank cards and mobile phones using NFC modules or special applications for mobile phone payments. This modernization aims to streamline the payment process and enhance the overall user experience.
The introduction of this bank card payment system is not a standalone initiative. Over the past few years, Minsk's public transport system has undergone significant changes. Since 2021, the number of passengers transported by public transport in Minsk has been gradually increasing, with a 20% increase for surface transport and a 10.6% increase for the metro.
In 2025, the Minsk Metro is estimated to transport slightly over 263 million passengers, while the projected results for surface transport (buses and trolleybuses) are around 461 million passengers. This growth can be attributed to the addition of 20 new routes over the past five years and the increasing share of urban surface electric transport in Minsk, which currently stands at slightly over 29%.
Director Yuri Suparnovich has stated that the share of non-rail surface electric transport in Minsk will gradually increase in the future. In line with this, only electric buses operate on city route No. 1, and the bank card payment system will initially be available only on these vehicles. The implementation phase of this new system is currently underway, with the first bus for the new payment system already selected.
City route No. 1 runs from "Vesnyanka" bus station to "Centralny" bus station, and all buses on this route are electric. Trolleybuses, functional due to their ability to bypass obstacles on the route without using the contact network, are also part of Minsk's future plans for public transport.
As Minsk continues to modernize its public transportation system, the introduction of the bank card payment system for buses marks a significant step towards a more convenient and efficient urban travel experience.
