In the waters off Boltenhagen, a 30-day pilot project has begun to recover World War II munitions from the sea floor. This initiative, led by the Baltic Diving and Salvage Company based in Rostock, aims to remove approximately 15 tons of highly corroded ordnance over the next four weeks.

The primary risk of this recovery process is not from explosives, but rather from the slow release of carcinogenic and mutagenic corrosive materials into the water. As the munitions age and corrode on the seabed, they can leach toxic substances such as heavy metals and explosive residues into the marine environment, potentially impacting marine ecosystems and human health.

During the diving operations, divers have observed heavily encrusted munitions crates on the sea floor. To mitigate the risks of uncontrolled release or accidental detonation, careful underwater sorting, lifting, and disposal methods are being employed.

The "Baltic Lift" platform, a former tanker that is self-propelled, has arrived at the site and been securely anchored at four points. This specialized recovery unit is owned by the Baltic Diving and Salvage Company.

The operation in Großklützhöved, near Boltenhagen (Rostock district), is part of the immediate program for munitions clearance in the North and Baltic Seas. A total of 100 million euros in federal funds are available for this munitions clearance program.

In addition to the recovery and disposal efforts, an environmental monitoring phase is currently underway to assess the potential negative impacts of the recovery process. Mussels have been deployed near the site to test for potential pollution after the four-week operation.

It is estimated that the visible munitions on the sea floor are just a fraction of the estimated 1,000 tons of munitions, including grenades and rocket launchers, believed to be buried under several meters of soft sediment and mud. This makes the task of complete clearance a complex and lengthy process.

The focus on developing technical, ecological, and political solutions for these contaminated seabed sites demonstrates the seriousness of the potential environmental impacts due to aging munitions corrosion in the Baltic Sea region.
