Andy Serkis offers fresh insights into his Lord of the Rings spinoff project, confessing his inability to extricate himself from the character of Gollum.
In a thrilling turn of events, acclaimed actor Andy Serkis is set to reprise his iconic role as Gollum in the upcoming Lord of the Rings spinoff, "The Hunt for Gollum." This marks Serkis' return to the character after a 13-year hiatus since his last big-screen appearance as Gollum in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Serkis, who first voiced Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, considers the character a privilege and considers it a honour to be the ring-bearer for the character once more. The production of "The Hunt for Gollum" is expected to start sometime in 2025, with the film being shot in New Zealand.
While fans eagerly await the return of Gollum, Serkis can currently be seen in the psychological thriller series, The Girlfriend. Directed by Robin Wright, the six-part series sees Serkis as an executive producer. The series will be available on the September TV schedule on the 10th, with a Prime Video subscription needed to enjoy it.
At the London premiere of Prime Video's The Girlfriend, Serkis spoke about his love for the character of Gollum, considering it one of the best Lord of the Rings characters and inseparable from his career. Serkis fully embodied the character of Gollum via performance capture from The Two Towers onward, helping to push motion capture into the mainstream.
In addition to starring in The Hunt for Gollum, Serkis is also directing the film. The director of Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been set to direct The Hunt for Gollum, making it one of many Lord of the Rings spinoffs currently in production.
With a busy 2025 movie slate, fans can look forward to Andy Serkis' return as Gollum in "The Hunt for Gollum." The Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle director has praised The Girlfriend as a "phenomenal piece of work," and with Serkis' involvement, expectations are high for both projects.
