Angelic Event in New York: 12th Africa Fair Scheduled for September
In a significant move, the 12th edition of Angel Fair Africa will take place in New York, United States (US) on September 19, 2023. This marks the first time the event is being held in the US, bringing it closer to the African diaspora in the country.
Prolific angel investor Esther Dyson will be the keynote speaker for this edition, having previously spoken at the 2017 event in Abidjan. Dyson, known for her backing of numerous startups such as Netbeans, Flickr, 23andMe, Abridge.ai, Ilara Health, Meetup, Oradian, Rasello, Square, SWVL, Trella, and others, will share her insights and experiences with the attendees.
The event will be held at Google's 9th Avenue offices and will feature a room of curated investors for facilitating deals between entrepreneurs and investors. This has been a consistent aspect of the Angel Fair Africa events, which aim to provide a platform for startups to connect with potential investors.
This year, 10 African startup founders will be brought to the US to pitch to investors. The event has had significant participation from US investors over the years, making it an ideal platform for these startups to showcase their ideas.
In a statement, Eric Osiakwan, co-founder of Angel Fair Africa and managing partner of Chanzo Capital, said, "The debut of Angel Fair Africa in NY is an opportunity to bring the event closer to the African diaspora in the US."
Dyson believes that in the age of AI, it's easier to build process infrastructure more quickly, which can help startups to scale. She stated that startups are not the solution to all problems, but they can help change the environment that allows more Africans to prosper.
While the location of previous editions of Angel Fair Africa is not specified, it has been held in cities including Johannesburg, Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Abidjan, Maputo, Dar es Salaam, Mauritius, and Cape Town.
In addition to her work as an angel investor, Dyson has also founded and worked for the nonprofit community-health project Wellville from 2014 to 2024.
The 12th edition of Angel Fair Africa promises to be an exciting event, offering a unique opportunity for African startups to connect with investors and showcase their ideas on a global stage.
