Anniversary of Garath's Five Decades in Boxing Commemorated
In the heart of Garath, a small town in Düsseldorf, Germany, the Sportring Garath celebrated its 55th anniversary with a special event on February 22, 2023. The occasion marked the inauguration of a brand new boxing ring, a testament to the club's enduring passion for the sport.
The event saw 21 boxing matches take place at Kulturhaus Süd, with many young boxers making their first fight. The quality of the fights was not the highest, with many being judged as draws, indicating a focus on development rather than competition. This approach aligns with the club's ethos, which emphasizes education, discipline, respect, decency, and fairness in boxing.
Götz, a former boxing trainer, shared a heartwarming story about a young boy from Eastern Europe who started training and always thanked him. His anecdote underscores the profound impact the Sportring has had on its members over the years.
The club has 24 active boxers and plans to add five or six more. The current chairman, Önder Yildiz, who has been at the helm for about a year, grew up in the Sportring and emphasized the importance of education, discipline, respect, decency, and fairness in boxing.
Yildiz admitted that maintaining the club requires manpower and money. He expressed a desire to offer more than just boxing to young people, referring to the past sports offerings such as weightlifting, judo, volleyball, and table tennis.
Volker Götz, now 80 years old, stands as a trainer in the sports hall at Emil-Barth-Straße every Monday. He served as the club chairman from 1980 to 2005 and reported that the Sportring has always been the sports club for Garath East.

Gino Beganaj, the Sportring coach, emphasized that seven of their boxers participated in the matches. The club chairman, who is also a boxing trainer, manages a large number of young people during training sessions, often with only two trainers.
The event was a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Sportring Garath community. As they look towards the future, the club continues to strive for excellence in boxing, while also nurturing the next generation of athletes.
