Anniversary of the remarkable event over Ijima on September 7, marking 15 years

A Tu-154 aircraft, operated by Alrosa airline, was en route from Polarny to Domodedovo (Moscow) on September 7, 2010, when it made an emergency landing in Ijma, Russia. The safe landing of the plane, carrying 9 crew members and 72 passengers, was a testament to the skill, composure, and professionalism of the crew, as well as the efforts of a local resident named Sergei Sotnikov.

The Ijma airport had been closed for many years, but Sergei Sotnikov, a former head of the helicopter pad in Ijma, had independently maintained the runway in working condition. His diligence proved invaluable when the Tu-154, under the command of Yevgeny Novoselov, made an emergency landing after a complete power outage and failure of the onboard navigation systems, 3.5 hours after takeoff.

The runway, preserved by Sergei Sotnikov, was instrumental in the successful landing. The presence of centerline markings and approach lights on the Ijma runway contributed significantly to the safe landing of the aircraft. Yevgeny Novoselov, a Hero of Russia, thanked the residents of Ijma for their warm welcome and organization during the incident.

Rostislav Goldstein, the acting head of the Republic of Komi, praised the crew's efforts during the emergency landing. He also highlighted the efforts of Sergei Sotnikov in maintaining the Ijma runway in good condition. Despite the runway not being a formal passenger aircraft runway, it had been used occasionally for flights to the remote region.

After landing, the plane overran the runway by 164 meters and entered the forest. The plane remained in Ijma for another six months before being removed. Yevgeny Novoselov's son, who graduated from a flight school in 2022, now flies for the same airline, "Alrosa".

Rostislav Goldstein stated that the emergency landing of the Tu-154 on September 7, 2010, is not just a miracle, but a testament to the professionalism, conscience, and daily work of specific people, such as Sergei Sotnikov. His efforts, though often unrecognised, are a reminder of the importance of diligence and preparedness in unexpected situations.
