MIT Students and SUTD Participants Embark on Unique Global Leadership Program

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) Global Leadership Program (GLP) is currently in its third year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), providing a unique opportunity for students to combine creative, innovative, and analytical engineering with leadership development.

Thirty students from SUTD and four students from MIT are participating in a 10-week program that includes leadership training, engineering coursework, and outdoor adventure. The partnership between the two institutions aims to create a new university in Asia with the "mens-et-manus" ("mind-and-hand") spirit of MIT.

One of the MIT participants, Maryam Archie, is a rising sophomore who is eager to work on the electric water vehicle and hopes to make a decision about pursuing Course 6-2 or 6-3 in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Archie finds the SUTD GLP particularly appealing for fostering her engineering skills.

Daisy Tang, another MIT student in the program, shares Archie's enthusiasm. Tang sees the SUTD GLP as a way to develop as a global leader and values cross-cultural awareness and competence.

The program kicked off with a weeklong "Leadershape" training program for personal vision development and leadership skills. The leaders of the Global Leadership Program at the Singapore University of Technology and Design in collaboration with MIT are not explicitly named in the available search results.

SUTD students find the ceramics class appealing as SUTD does not have many visual arts offerings. The students are also currently engaged in classes such as Technical Writing, Wilderness Engineering, Education Innovation, Architectural Drawing, and Electric Water Vehicle Design Challenge.

A new offering this year is the Electric Water Vehicle class where students construct vessels using plywood, fiberglass, simple motors, controllers, and other materials. The students will have opportunities for kayaking and wilderness camping excursions in Maine to test out skills acquired in the Wilderness Engineering class.

Tang looks forward to accessing the resources at the International Design Center (IDC) and learning to operate various tools for the electric boat challenge. Navigating the Cambridge traffic is a challenge for some SUTD students as cars do not always stop at red lights.

The SUTD GLP will culminate with a boat race at the MIT Sailing Pavillion on August 3rd at 10 a.m., and members of the MIT community are welcome to attend. Interested MIT undergraduates can contact Kate Rhodes at [email protected] for more information about the GLP in summer 2016.

The partnership between MIT and SUTD includes research collaboration, curricular development, teaching fellowships, faculty residencies, and dual masters programs. The collaboration is designed to create a new university in Asia with the innovative spirit of MIT.
