Anticipated Actions on Climate and Environment by Trump's Second Term

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has expressed optimism about combating climate change, a stark contrast to the actions of former President Donald Trump. During his second term, Trump started to roll back climate initiatives and environmental regulations, including withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, an international treaty aimed at combating climate change.

Trump's decisions had potential consequences. He pledged to increase the use of fossil fuels, which could lead to an increase in national emissions and pollutants. Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement could lead to global warming continuing to rise during Trump's presidency. Moreover, Trump slashed the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and replaced Obama's Clean Power Plan.

However, Trump's actions did not go unchallenged. Organisations such as the WWF Europa, which supports strong climate policies and green innovation, and over 470 other organisations in Europe, opposed deregulation in environmental protection. Scientific groups like the Vereinigung Deutscher Wissenschaftler (VDW) and international bodies engaged in climate policy and monitoring, such as the EU Commission pursuing the Green Deal, also acted against such setbacks.

Despite federal climate action being hindered, there are opportunities for progress. The Bank of America predicts that oil prices will fall in 2025 as the American crude supply surpasses its demand. This could potentially pave the way for a shift towards renewable energy sources.

Individuals can also make a difference. Contacting local representatives, joining advocacy groups, or donating to relevant organisations can help fight environmental deregulation. Trump also targeted the electric vehicle (EV) industry by removing emission standards and working to remove tax credits. This move could potentially slow down the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.
