Anticipated High-Grade Apple Crop at Lake Constance This Season
The apple season on Lake Constance has officially begun, with a focus on achieving a balance between economic success, natural resource protection, and societal demands. State Secretary Sabine Kurtz, from the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas, and Consumer Protection, spoke at the opening of the season on the Steffelin Orchard in Markdorf-Ittendorf, Lake Constance district.
Two producer organizations, Württembergische Obstgenossenschaft Raiffeisen e.G. (WOG) and Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst e.G. (MaBo), are working together to bundle fruit from around 600 producer operations in Baden-Württemberg. These organizations are playing a crucial role in promoting delicious, vitamin-rich apples, raising consumer awareness of regional fruit for a healthy diet, and communicating industry concerns to a wide audience.
The Sustainability Project "FAIRDI - Echt Bodenseeapfel," supported by the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas, and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg, is a key initiative in this endeavour. The project aims to reduce plant protection measures through the cultivation of robust apple varieties and promote biological diversity in apple production. It also includes a marketing concept for regional fruit production.
The Lake Constance Fruit Region is actively working on the project, with the goal of promoting biological diversity, reducing plant protection measures, and developing a marketing concept for regional fruit production. The regional campaign 'Naturally.VON DAHEIM' is being used to sharpen and make tangible the unique profile of apples produced by WOG and MaBo for consumers.
State Secretary Sabine Kurtz highlighted the EU Program for the Promotion of Producer Organizations in the Fruit and Vegetable Sector as a special promotion tool for the fruit industry. This programme includes the promotion of core fruit plantings, hail protection nets, and irrigation systems.
Despite the challenging 2025 growing season, good apple qualities and sizes were still achieved on Lake Constance. The central themes of the Sustainability Project "FAIRDI - Echt Bodenseeapfel" include promoting biological diversity, reducing plant protection measures, and a marketing concept for regional fruit production.
State Secretary Sabine Kurtz emphasized the importance of servicing and strengthening regional and supraregional markets, as well as tapping into new markets with added value potential, to strengthen the fruit industry. The Lake Constance apple season opening aims to contribute to this goal by promoting local apples and increasing consumer awareness of the benefits of a healthy, regional diet.
