Anticipated Traffic Congestion on Parkway East and Parkway North This Weekend as Per PennDOT
John Shumway, General Assignment Reporter at KDKA, reports that motorists in Pittsburgh should brace themselves for a series of road closures and lane changes over the weekend, as PennDOT undertakes a significant reconstruction project on I-279 and the Parkway East.
Starting from 9 p.m. on Friday night, single lane traffic will be in effect on both the Parkway North and the Parkway East. The work on the Parkway North is expected to last until Sunday morning, with the section between exits 54A and 55 undergoing resurfacing. On the Parkway East, the reconstruction work will take place between exits 57C and 61, with two lanes expected to reopen by Sunday morning as well.
The changes on I-279 are just a transition, not the end of the work. Crews will move the lane around on I-279 to accommodate the necessary changes, and Myler, the project engineer, expects the traffic change to create backups and that the single lane will be a challenge. The westbound bridge on the Parkway East is scheduled to be completed by early December, and the Parkway East will be taken down to a single lane in each direction for the reconstruction work.
The Parkway East and I-279 work are part of a larger project to restore the pavement markings. The reconstruction of bridges on the Parkway East over Old William Penn Highway will also take place. After the closure of the I-579 temporary traffic crossover on the Parkway North, the original exit to 579 will be reopened as a right exit. The hope is to have the Parkway North and I-579 across the Veterans Bridge back to its original state by Monday morning.
The work on the Parkway East is expected to slow traffic, even though it's the weekend. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and expect delays. On I-279, the road will be a single lane headed into Downtown Pittsburgh for most of the weekend into Sunday morning.
The reconstruction of the bridges on the Parkway East is under the responsibility of PennDOT, and the changes on I-279 are only a transition, not the end of the work. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and to check traffic updates regularly.
