Anticipates swift decision on European nations' pledge for Ukraine's security assurances, according to NATO leader
Yesterday, a significant meeting took place in Paris, involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, leaders from a coalition of around 30 countries, and NATO Chief Mark Rutte. The coalition, spearheaded by France and Britain, intends to provide support to Kiev's military in an effort to deter future Russian aggression.
The talks were aimed at firming up security guarantees for Ukraine, with NATO Chief Rutte expressing expectations that the discussions would lead to clear commitments. However, the exact promises that U.S. President Donald Trump is willing to give remain vague.
Trump has expressed a willingness to support the Europeans in the talks, but has ruled out the deployment of American troops on the ground in Ukraine. Instead, he has emphasised the importance of collective delivery, stating that clarity on collective delivery is expected either tomorrow or soon after.
Diplomats reported that European countries in the coalition were asked to provide concrete details on their contributions at a meeting of military chiefs last week. The specific contributions of countries belonging to the "Coalition of the Willing" include military support, financial aid, diplomatic efforts to strengthen Ukraine's defense, and facilitating dialogue between involved parties to promote a peaceful resolution.
The coalition of the willing, while not a formal NATO entity, is a significant player in the international community. The deployment of the coalition's forces aims to deter future Russian aggression and create a safer environment for Ukraine.
Trump hosted Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska last month, expressing disappointment with Putin for failing to move towards a peace deal on Ukraine on Sept. 2. Despite this, Trump has been attempting, unsuccessfully so far, to organize a summit between President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky.
Volodymyr Zelensky attended the talks in Paris with leaders from the coalition of the willing. The Paris talks are expected to pave the way for a clearer picture on U.S. involvement and potentially mark a significant step towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
