Labor Day Travel Advisory: A Guide for Smooth Journeys

With the holiday weekend fast approaching, travellers in the New York City metro area should be prepared for increased traffic and longer wait times, as record numbers of people head out for a well-deserved break. Here's a roundup of travel tips and advisories to help you navigate the busy period.

Rail Travel

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is promoting its trains as the best way to travel during the Labor Day weekend. NJ Transit is adding extra service on several lines, including the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, Raritan Valley, Morris and Essex, and Port Jervis lines, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday. Metro-North will run extra trains on its three East of Hudson lines on Friday and will run "early-getaway" trains on its Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines on Friday. Trains will run on a normal weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday, and then on a weekend/holiday schedule on Monday.

Road Travel

If you're hitting the road, the best time to do so is early in the day. For those heading out on Thursday or Friday, the best time to hit the road is before 11 a.m., and even before 8 a.m. if you're heading to the Hamptons. Thursday afternoon is one of the busiest times to travel due to increased traffic. Roadways near the airports, such as the Van Wick, Belt Parkway, Grand Central Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, will be overloaded, particularly on Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon.

Air Travel

Passengers on domestic flights are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours in advance of their departure time, and passengers on international flights are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours in advance. The Port Authority has issued a travel advisory, warning travellers of longer wait times at the airports due to higher passenger volume and ongoing construction. The busiest days at the airports (JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, and Stewart) are expected to be Thursday, Friday, and Monday.

Other Considerations

Conditions are expected to stay cool and dry through Labor Day weekend. However, the weather forecast for the weekend is expected to be beautiful, which will contribute to busier roads. The Port Authority has suspended all non-emergency repairs and construction projects during the busy travel period.

On Friday, August 31, 2025, the latest expected road users in New York City will likely be attendees of late-night club events and parties such as those at Brooklyn's Avant Gardner, House of Yes in Bushwick, and Webster Hall in East Village, which host events into the late evening; similarly, air travelers may experience delays or late check-ins due to typical flight and airport congestions around this busy holiday weekend, especially with special events increasing nightlife traffic.

Brooklyn Traffic

Monday's West Indian American Day Junior Carnival Parade and related events will affect traffic in Brooklyn over the weekend, with streets along the route being closed as early as Saturday.

Hoboken PATH Station Closure

Hoboken PATH riders should note their local station will be closed over the holiday weekend for repairs.

Record Traffic Volumes

An estimated 4.2 million vehicles will use the Port Authority's bridges and tunnels during the Labor Day weekend, which is around the same number as last year. Record 2.4 million travelers are expected at Port Authority airports during the 6-day Labor Day travel period, a 1% increase from the record set last year.

Travel Tips

The Port Authority encourages travellers to plan for additional travel time, prebook parking spaces if driving, or use public transportation when possible to access the airports. With traffic levels in the New York City metro area back up to pre-pandemic highs for the Labor Day weekend, it's best to be prepared and avoid unnecessary stress. Happy travels!
