Anticipation runs high among Kenyans as they prepare for the Kasarani fireworks in the lead-up to the Gambia match
In the heart of Nairobi, Kasarani Stadium will be the centre of attention today at 4pm as Harambee Stars take on Gambia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The team, under the guidance of coach Benni McCarthy, has been building momentum since his appointment six months ago. McCarthy has emphasised his long-term vision for Kenyan football, aiming to build a team ready for the 2027 Afcon qualifiers and top competitive tournaments.
Kenya currently sits fourth in Group F with 6 points, and a win against Gambia would lift them to 9 points, edging closer to second-placed Ivory Coast (16) and third-placed Burundi (10). For Gambia, currently on 4 points, a victory would move them to 7 points and above Kenya in the standings.
Captain Michael Olunga expressed optimism about the upcoming match, crediting coach McCarthy with lifting the morale of the squad. Olunga also warned that Gambia remains a dangerous opponent, emphasising the importance of the team's preparation. McCarthy concurred, stating that his squad is fully prepared for the contest.
The team's performance in the Chan competition was described as very strong by McCarthy. He mentioned that the team was built within a short period of time for the competition, and he believes that with more time, the team can be made even bigger.
McCarthy admitted lessons were learned from the first leg of the match and emphasised the need for the team to capitalise on their improvements. The past six months have reignited the love for football in Kenya, according to McCarthy, with local players now getting the needed recognition.
Looking ahead, McCarthy expressed his desire for the team to have more success in the future. Meanwhile, Olunga expressed his confidence in the team's ability to secure a win today, setting the stage for an exciting match at Kasarani Stadium.
On a separate note, it is worth mentioning that Group F of the UEFA qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 will consist of Portugal, Hungary, Ireland, and Armenia. The Group F match between these teams will be played on March 4, 2025, but the current standings and specific team rankings are not available at this time.
