Apple introduces simplified video editing features in their latest iMovie update, reducing the labor involved in video editing.
Apple has recently updated its free video editing software, iMovie, with two new features designed to make video creation easier for beginners. The new additions, Storyboards and Magic Movie, offer a more streamlined approach to video production, ideal for those who want to quickly stylize a video or string together related clips.
Storyboards, a new organisational tool, allows users to delete, reorder, and add videos or sections, providing a path through the video creation process. For instance, a "Product review" storyboard might suggest starting with a medium shot of the product before going into a wide shot of introducing the device. This feature could be particularly useful for high school or college students making introductory videos or budding YouTubers who are intimidated by traditional timeline-based video editing.
On the other hand, Magic Movie is best suited for beginners who want to create a finished video product with minimal effort. This low-effort video creation tool stitches together unedited clips into a finished project, complete with transition effects, a soundtrack, and added titles. Magic Movie uses nifty algorithms to select the best moments from each clip and adds appropriate titles, transitions, and music. At launch, there are 20 styles and 130 royalty-free songs available for Magic Movie.
Magic Movie is available on iOS 15.2 or later and iPadOS 15.2 or later. Users can select an album and a group of photos or images from their library to begin creating their video. Once the video is finished, whether in Magic Movie or Storyboards, it can be shared to social media or exported to Final Cut Pro for further editing.
However, Magic Movie may not be suitable for professional projects intended for YouTube or portfolios due to its limited manual editing tools. Videographers seeking more control over editing process can use Storyboards, a new addition to iMovie 3.0.
It's worth noting that Storyboards is also a shot list with recommendations specific to various video topics. Custom storyboards based on a user's choice of topic (personal, social, wellness, thank you, product review) contain placeholders suggesting video creation.
While the new iMovie features may not appeal to Apple users who hoped iMovie 3.0 would bring more professional features to the free video editing software, they certainly offer a more accessible and user-friendly approach to video creation for beginners. The new features were developed by Apple, the company behind iMovie, with the aim of making video creation easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
